Sam Richmond-Brown

Client Portfolio Manager of the Thematics Asset Management
Natixis Investment Managers

Presentation: Water, the most « anchored » of the structural growth themes?

The Thematics Water fund invests in companies that are providers of Water Services and Technologies, or Municipal Solid Waste processing services. This represents a varied opportunity set that we categorize into 3 distinct segments based on the end market use of the products or services within those categories:

  • ‘Demand Efficiency’ comprising opportunities in a series of often more economically-sensitive, markets including Consumer, Distributors, Industry and Agriculture
  • ‘Pollution Control’exhibiting somewhat more defensive characteristics through the cycle than the broader global stock market
  • ‘Water Infrastructure’, including ‘Regulated Utilities’ and ‘Concessions’ with a relatively defensive, predictable earnings and stock market performance profile, and also water ‘Technologies’, where there is a specific water infrastructure application

The result is a fund with an attractive risk/return profile driven by long-term secular trends in its targeted end markets.

Sam Richmond-Brown joined Thematics Asset Management in March 2020 as Client Portfolio Manager, with primary responsibilities as acting as a conduit between sales teams, clients and investment teams.
Sam joined Natixis in 2006 and has held a variety of product development and product management roles based in London, Paris and Boston. In 2011, Sam joined the group’s quantitative investment division as an investment specialist servicing the needs of a broad client base across the globe.

Natixis Investment Managers:

Thematics AM is based in Paris and manages over 3 bn USD of client assets across a focused range of global active thematic equity strategies. The company employs 17 people, including 10 highly experienced portfolio managers. Thematics Asset Manager is an affiliate of Natixis Investment Manager.

The firm was set up by 6 partners in early 2019.  Five of those partners are highly experienced portfolio managers that have an established reputation and proven track record in thematic investing. The willingness to set up an entrepreneurial boutique entirely focused on thematic investing was motivated by the clear recognition of the underlying market opportunity along with the strong desire to develop and launch unconstrained investment strategies that have the ability to provide sources of resilient growth within client portfolios.
